Success.
It’s a word in business circles, often defined by scale, profit, influence, awards, and status. But what if your version of success doesn’t fit the traditional mould?
What if success isn’t about being the biggest, the richest, or the most powerful?
What if it’s about something entirely different, deeply personal, quietly impactful, beautifully simple?
What if your business gave you a good life, helped many people, and made you feel secure, safe, and proud without being defined by your car, house, or possessions?
That sounds like success to me.
I’m the kind of business mentor who believes you should define your success. Small or large, scaled or slow, as long as it aligns with your heart, values, and purpose, I’m here for it.
What Truly Matters to You?
When I was 21, I drew a red line around human rights, leading to my first business. Then, in 2015, when I felt the pull to mentor, I set another red line, working only with companies that give back to the planet.
I stand with those who regenerate rather than extract, give more than they take, and understand that business is not separate from life, land, or people.
What are your red lines?
The Myth of “Making It”
We are told there’s only one path to success:
- Grow fast. Scale big. Expand endlessly.
- Push harder. Hustle more. Never stop.
- Earn more. Be more. Achieve more.
- Work long hours, or you’re not trying.
But does more always mean better?
For some, the pinnacle of success is running a multi-million-pound company, landing prestigious clients, or becoming an industry leader. And if that feels true for you, that’s wonderful.
But what if your version of success looks radically different?
What If Success Is…
- Well-being? Building a business that gives you rest, ease, and freedom instead of burnout.
- Impact? Creating something that changes people’s lives—even in the smallest, most human way.
- Relationships? Designing a career that lets you be present with those you love, rather than just present in meetings.
- Regeneration? Working in a way that restores land, ecosystems, and communities rather than depleting them.
- Charity? Using your resources to give back, uplift, and support those who need it most.
- Travel? Structuring your business so you can explore, experience, and live freely rather than being tied to one place.
- Security? Not about having more, but simply enough—enough income, enough stability, enough peace of mind.
And What About Money?
- Money. Just enough? More than enough? A big house? A life of travel?
- Money matters, but chasing money for the sake of it might not work for you. We’ve been conditioned to believe that more is always better, but what if it’s about having just the right amount for the life you truly want?
- Have you ever sat down and worked it out? What do you want? What do you need money for? Security? Freedom? Experiences? Generosity? Then go and create that on your terms. Not someone else’s version of income success. Not someone else’s measure of wealth. Yours.
- Because success isn’t just about what you earn; it’s about what you create, how you live, and whether it truly aligns with the life you want to lead.
Defining Your Own Version of Success
So, what does success look like for you?
- Is it about freedom or structure?
- Is it about expansion or simplicity?
- Is it about legacy or deep presence in the now?
- Perhaps it’s about a beautiful dream that others tell you isn’t “realistic” or “profitable”.
- How much is a good income for you?
- How much does your business help others?
There is no single answer, only the one that feels true to you.
Letting Go of Society’s Expectations
Redefining success means letting go of external expectations—and that’s no small thing.
Parents, friends, peers will judge you by their own standards. Success, to them, may look like wealth or influence.
But you don’t have to chase numbers, validation, or endless growth just because that’s what you’re “supposed” to do.
You get to build something that aligns with your values, your needs, your life.
And that might mean:
✔ Saying no to what doesn’t feel aligned.
✔ Designing a slower, more intentional business.
✔ Measuring success by impact, not just income.
✔ Prioritising joy, wellness, and connection over constant hustle.
You Get to Decide
The most powerful thing about success is that it’s yours to define.
So ask yourself:
What does success mean to you?
What are you working toward, and is it really what you want?
What would it feel like to create success on your own terms?
What would nature say about what you do?
Where does your business offer value to land, people, and all life?
Maybe the ultimate version of success isn’t about having more.
Maybe it’s about having enough of what truly matters.
And maybe that’s the real revolution, the radical choice we can make in these times.
How Did We Get Here?
Business wasn’t always about profit first. Its origins are in community, reciprocity, and survival.
Early businesses weren’t built for extraction; they were about exchange. Trade was about meeting mutual needs.
The Industrial Revolution shifted business towards mass production, wealth accumulation, and efficiency at all costs. It was built on human rights abuse in slavery and poor conditions and wages that were barely enough to live on. Competition replaced cooperation, and profit was maximised at the expense of people and land. We are still living with this legacy in many ways.
A Return to Purpose?
Ethical business, social enterprises, and regenerative models are shifting the focus back to sustainability and impact.
B Corporations, community-driven initiatives, and indigenous wisdom remind us that business can serve people, planet, and purpose, not just profit.
This is the choice before us.
Will we continue on a path of extraction, accumulation, and depletion?
Or will we return to a working method that restores, regenerates, and reconnects?
